Kris Dasean Sherrod convicted of sexually abusing a ten-year-old child
Kris Dasean Sherrod was convicted of sexually abusing a child after a jury trial on November 20th, 2024, before the Honorable Judge Bryant Sugg. Sherrod was convicted of one count of indecent liberties with a child by a guardian, and one count of sodomy of a child under the age of 13. The defendant committed these acts against this child who was known to him, and who was only ten years old at the time. Testimony at trial indicated that Sherrod was left as the only adult with the child in a hotel room, when he committed multiple sexual acts against the 10-year-old. Testimony indicated that this child was not the first child-victim to report unwanted advances by Sherrod.
“My office aggressively pursues justice and accountability for those who sexually abuse young children. I pray for the children who survive these horrific acts, that they will find a measure of peace in knowing that these individuals will not be free to harm others,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn.
The case was investigated by Newport News Police Detective J. Stewart, with the assistance of Detective H. Froneberger. Expert testimony from Amber Grant, of CHKD’s Child Advocacy Center, independently assisted the jury with understanding child sexual abuse, forensic interviewing, and delayed reporting. Sherrod’s official sentencing hearing is set for March 21, 2025 and he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
This case was prosecuted on behalf of the Commonwealth’s Attorney by Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Rebecca Thompson.
