[Newport News — June 13, 2024] Today the Hon. Tyneka L. D. Flythe of the Newport News Circuit Court sentenced David Wayne Edmonds to 20 years in prison, with 14 years suspended for assaulting his elderly father.
Edmonds was convicted of malicious wounding after assaulting his elderly father on June 15, 2023. During an argument, Edmonds repeatedly punched his father in the face, ultimately causing him to lose consciousness. He fled the scene and his father was discovered in his home several hours later by a family friend, who called for emergency services. The victim was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Room, where he was later admitted to the neurology unit suffering from a subarachnoid hemorrhage (a brain bleed) with a loss of consciousness, a concussion and later post-concussive syndrome, as well as a nasal bone fracture.
“This office takes elder abuse seriously, and those who take advantage of our city’s vulnerable older adults must be held accountable under the law.” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn. Anyone who suspects elder abuse should report the abuse to local law enforcement, and to the Virginia Elder Abuse Hotline, which is available 24/7 at (888) 832-3858.
This case was prosecuted on behalf of the Commonwealth’s Attorney by Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Rebecca Thompson.
