Newport News man sentenced to 60 years for rape

Judge Tyneka Flythe sentenced Steven Bowen to 60 years of incarceration in a state prison and an additional suspended sentence after convicting him of two counts of rape, two counts of sodomy, burglary, grand larceny, abduction, and robbery.

Bowen may have entered the victim’s home through the garage door. Once inside he broke the victim’s bedroom door open, came in and ordered her to perform oral sex on him saying he had a weapon. Police later found her door was in fact broken.

Bowen forcibly performed oral sex on the victim, then raped her twice through out the night. Bowen forced the victim downstairs to her garage where he demanded her purse. The victim pretended to not know where it was. Bowen then forced the woman back upstairs, demanding money. She gave him some money from a jacket.

Bowen forced her back downstairs and ordered her to drive him away from the home. The woman drove just to a nearby neighbor’s house and fled to that house for help. Bowen drove away in her vehicle, which police found nearby. The woman’s neighbor testified that she showed up at his house in the early morning and seemed disoriented and upset.

Bowen, 35, has a lengthy criminal history and committed additional larceny offenses while on bond awaiting trial for these charges.
