RONALD AUSBY SENTENCING
September 25, 2015
For Immediate Release
Newport News, Virginia
A 27-year-old Newport News man was sentenced to life in prison on Friday, September 25, 2015, for shooting and killing Malik Lewis, 18.
On October 9, 2012, Ausby and Lewis passed each other in a shortcut near Forest Drive and Arbor Court when they got into a brief verbal disagreement. Ausby shot Lewis in the back as Lewis was walking away from the brief exchange. Ausby then shot Lewis in the face several times after he was on the ground.
Lewis’ family told Judge Timothy Fisher that his young siblings go his grave to play with Lewis and leave their new toys at his grave so Lewis will have something to play with after they leave. The family could not explain to the boys that Lewis was murdered because they did not want the children to know how terrible the world is.
Judge Fisher imposed the maximum sentence of life in prison without parole as well as three years in prison for using a firearm to commit the felony at the request of Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorneys Brock Maust and Jamie Wilder.
