For Immediate Release

Newport News, Virginia

A man was sentenced to seven years in prison on May 29, 2015, after he abducted his girlfriend and beat her following a Halloween party.

Gary Douglass and his girlfriend had attended a Halloween party on October 31, 2014, when Douglass got so intoxicated that he was thrown out of the party for being disruptive. Douglass forced his girlfriend into his car and brutally beat her. At one point the woman was able to get out of the car and tried to get away but Douglass chased her down and forced her back into the car.

When Douglass stopped at a 7-11, the woman was able to sneak into the store behind him to get help. A clerk hid her in the back of the store after seeing her bloody, swollen bruised face, disheveled hair and clothes and her shredded stockings.

Douglass attacked another clerk when he realized the clerk was calling 911 to help the woman. Customers had to intervene to stop Douglass’ attack on the clerk, which was caught on store surveillance tape.

Douglass was found guilty in March of abduction and assault and battery on a family member and given a seven year prison sentence. He will be on probation after his release from prison.
