For Immediate Release

Newport News, Virginia

Anthony William Laverie has been convicted and sentenced for robbing Ryan Acree on August 5, 2012.

Laverie participated in the strong-arm robbery of Ryan Acree on August 5, 2013. He pleaded not guilty, but was convicted of the crime on May 2, 2013, by Judge C. P. Tench of the Newport News Circuit Court. Anthony Laverie’s brother, Derek Laverie, is alleged to have committed the robbery with him.  Derek Laverie’s case is still before the Circuit Court.

Anthony Laverie had told investigating Detective C. Howser that he was present when his brother robbed Mr. Acree; but maintained that Derek Laverie acted alone and that he did not participate in the robbery. His statement was contradicted by Mr. Acree’s testimony that two men physically attacked him and forcibly took his wallet.  Laverie was sentenced on July 10, 2013 to 10 years in prison, with 7 years 5 months suspended for 20 years. Mr. Laverie will be required to participate in substance abuse treatment and to pay restitution of $190.87 to Mr. Acree through the Clerk of Court’s office.
